California Conservation Corps - Recognition and Budget Cuts

Recognition and Budget Cuts

The CCC has received praise from the United Nations Environment Programme, earning the international organization's medal for leadership in engaging youth in environmental projects. The corps has also received awards from the U.S. Department of Energy. On a visit to Sacramento on October 4, 1988, President George H. W. Bush suggested that the CCC should be duplicated in other states.

In 1983 the CCC was profiled in Smithsonian Magazine with a multipage article and pictorial detailing the successes and daily life of corps members.

Despite high praise from federal and international institutions, since 1992, the California Department of Finance has continuously allotted less funding to the CCC, forcing the closure of numerous residential centers throughout the state.

Famous quotes containing the words recognition, budget and/or cuts:

No democracy can long survive which does not accept as fundamental to its very existence the recognition of the rights of minorities.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

The United States is the only great nation whose government is operated without a budget. The fact is to be the more striking when it is considered that budgets and budget procedures are the outgrowth of democratic doctrines and have an important part in developing the modern constitutional rights.... The constitutional purpose of a budget is to make government responsive to public opinion and responsible for its acts.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

Spirit is the life that itself cuts into life: with its own torment it increases its own knowledge. Did you already know that?
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
