On 20 September 2009, he married his longtime girlfriend, Janine Viljoen, at Sorex estate's chapel in Centurion. The wedding made headlines for its strict security policy. Guests were asked to leave their cameras and mobile phones outside, and no vehicles were allowed onto the estate.
