Benetton Rugby Treviso - History

History

Treviso rugby team were founded in 1932. The club would win its first honour when they took out the 1952 Italian premiership, the first of many titles that would come for the club. During the 1970s, Benetton Treviso won the Italian Cup for the first time in its history during the 1970 season, and it 1978, sponsored by Metalcrom, won the Italian premiership once again. The year after Benetton became the main sponsor and the name of the team became "Benetton Rugby Treviso". The domestic premiership was won twice during the 1980s as well, in 1983 and then again in 1989. Benetton Treviso won it three seasons later as well, being champions of the 1992 season.

Rugby turned professional after 1995. Benetton Treviso competed in the 1995-96 Heineken Cup, the inaugural competition of the European rugby competitions. Benetton Treviso played two games in the competition, winning one and losing one. The following season they played four matches in the Heineken Cup, and won just the one game. They also won the domestic championship in the 1997 season. The 1998–99 Heineken Cup produced good results for Benetton Treviso, as they won three games.

Benetton Treviso dominated the Italian leagues for a number of seasons to come. They won the Italian Cup in 1998, as well as their premiership, this was followed by premiership victories in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Benetton Treviso spent the 2000–01 and 2002–03 European seasons in the European Challenge Cup, but have appeared in the Heineken Cup in each season since then. They won half of their games during the 2004–05 Heineken Cup, but would win only one Heineken Cup match in the following four seasons (at Newport Gwent Dragons in 2007). They scored arguably their biggest European win in their 2009–10 Heineken Cup opener, stunning reigning Top 14 champions Perpignan 9–8 in Treviso.

Agreement was reached in early March 2010 to allow two Italian teams a place each in the Celtic League from 2010–11 season onwards. Both clubs would also be guaranteed places annually into the Heineken Cup, which had previously been awarded to the two top teams in the domestic Italian Super 10. After initial applications in 2010 it was proposed that Aironi would join along with a new team Praetorians Roma, but Treviso were nominated instead. Treviso and a combination of Duchi Nord-Ovest rugby clubs could not agree to form one club to represent the Veneto region and lost out in the first round of bidding despite the region being the traditional home of Italian rugby. However Pretorians Roma failed to satisfy financial criteria, and Treviso were nominated in their place.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

If usually the “present age” is no very long time, still, at our pleasure, or in the service of some such unity of meaning as the history of civilization, or the study of geology, may suggest, we may conceive the present as extending over many centuries, or over a hundred thousand years.
    Josiah Royce (1855–1916)

The myth of independence from the mother is abandoned in mid- life as women learn new routes around the mother—both the mother without and the mother within. A mid-life daughter may reengage with a mother or put new controls on care and set limits to love. But whatever she does, her child’s history is never finished.
    Terri Apter (20th century)

It’s not the sentiments of men which make history but their actions.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
