Association Football in Japan - Women's Football

Women's Football

As in Europe's advanced countries, Japanese women's association football is organized on a promotion and relegation basis. The top flight of women's association football is the semi-professional L. League (currently billed as the Nadeshiko League). Most clubs are independent clubs, although the recent trend is to have women's sections of established J. League clubs.

The national team is the reigning world champion, having achieved its greatest triumph ever by winning the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.

Famous quotes containing the words women and/or football:

This night has been so strange that it seemed
As if the hair stood up on my head.
From going-down of the sun I have dreamed
That women laughing, or timid or wild,
In rustle of lace or silken stuff,
    Climbed up my creaking stair.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

...I’m not money hungry.... People who are rich want to be richer, but what’s the difference? You can’t take it with you. The toys get different, that’s all. The rich guys buy a football team, the poor guys buy a football. It’s all relative.
    Martina Navratilova (b. 1956)
