Factors

The various factors which determine ascribed status are: Age (as in age stratification), Kinship, Sex, Appearance, Race, Group, Caste.

In addition to ascription, at birth there are also: Delayed Ascription (When the social status is given at a later stage of life), Fluid Ascription ( When the ascribed status leads to an achieved status).

Famous quotes containing the word factors:

I always knew I wanted to be somebody. I think that’s where it begins. People decide, “I want to be somebody. I want to make a contribution. I want to leave my mark here.” Then different factors contribute to how you will do that.
    Faith Ringgold (b. 1934)

The economic dependence of woman and her apparently indestructible illusion that marriage will release her from loneliness and work and worry are potent factors in immunizing her from common sense in dealing with men at work.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

Girls tend to attribute their failures to factors such as lack of ability, while boys tend to attribute failure to specific factors, including teachers’ attitudes. Moreover, girls avoid situations in which failure is likely, whereas boys approach such situations as a challenge, indicating that failure differentially affects self-esteem.
    Michael Lewis (late–20th-century)
