According to Gil Marks "Each of the three separate Indian Jewish communities - Cochin, Mumbai, Calcutta - counts in its culinary repertoire grain dishes called appam.". The palappam dish of Cochin Jews and Saint Thomas Christians (also known as Syrian Christians or Nasrani), akin to dosa, is made from the batter of ground soaked rice, coconut milk. A little kall which means toddy in Malayalam is used for fermentation. This is otherwise known as Kallappam.
