Early Life
The son of a shoemaker and tanner in Lower Largo, Fife, Scotland, Selkirk was born in 1676. In his youth he displayed a quarrelsome and unruly disposition. Summoned in August 1693 before the Kirk Session for his "indecent behaviour" in church, he "did not appear, being gone to sea. Continued until his return."
Early on he was engaged in buccaneering and in 1703 joined the expedition of famed English privateer and explorer William Dampier to the South Seas. While Dampier was captain of the St. George, Selkirk served on the Cinque Ports, the St. George's companion, as a sailing master serving under Thomas Stradling.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“Long before I wrote stories, I listened for stories. Listening for them is something more acute than listening to them. I suppose its an early form of participation in what goes on. Listening children know stories are there. When their elders sit and begin, children are just waiting and hoping for one to come out, like a mouse from its hole.”
—Eudora Welty (b. 1909)
“Indeed, the life of cattle, like that of many men, is but a sort of locomotiveness; they move a side at a time, and man, by his machinery, is meeting the horse and the ox half-way.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
