Eastern Front
During the invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa), the Polizei Division was initially part of the reserve with Army Group North. In August 1941, the division saw action near Luga. It was during heavy fighting for the Luga bridgehead (held by seven Soviet divisions), that the Polizei Division lost over 2,000 soldiers including the commander, Arthur Mülverstadt, in bloody frontal assaults. The fighting across swamp and forest caused a number of problems and after a series of failed attacks the Polizei Division, along with the help of army formations, managed to fight into the northern part of Luga, encircling and destroying the Soviet defenders in the process.

Famous quotes containing the words eastern and/or front:
“All the morning we had heard the sea roar on the eastern shore, which was several miles distant.... It was a very inspiriting sound to walk by, filling the whole air, that of the sea dashing against the land, heard several miles inland. Instead of having a dog to growl before your door, to have an Atlantic Ocean to growl for a whole Cape!”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“No matter how vast, how total, the failure of man here on earth, the work of man will be resumed elsewhere. War leaders talk of resuming operations on this front and that, but mans front embraces the whole universe.”
—Henry Miller (18911980)
