2005 San Diego Padres Season

The 2005 San Diego Padres season was the 36th season for the San Diego Padres. The 2005 team is noted as having the weakest record among division champions, finishing 82-80, the worst ever in a non-strike year. The NL West was weak in 2005, with all teams finishing below the .500 mark except the San Diego Padres, who only finished 2 games above the .500 mark. The closest team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, were 5 games back. Three teams in the Eastern Division finished with better records than San Diego but failed to qualify for the playoffs, including the Phillies, which won 88 games and all six of its contests with the Padres. There had been some speculation that the Padres would be the first team in MLB history to win a division and finish below .500, but their victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 30 gave them their 81st victory, guaranteeing a split record. They would be swept by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2005 NLDS.

Famous quotes containing the words san and/or season:

The gold-digger in the ravines of the mountains is as much a gambler as his fellow in the saloons of San Francisco. What difference does it make whether you shake dirt or shake dice? If you win, society is the loser.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

When we reached the lake, about half past eight in the evening, it was still steadily raining, and harder than before; and, in that fresh, cool atmosphere, the hylodes were peeping and the toads ringing about the lake universally, as in the spring with us. It was as if the season had revolved backward two or three months, or I had arrived at the abode of perpetual spring.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
