On Thursday May 23, the final practice session was held. Indy rookie Tony Kanaan led the speed chart at 225.752 mph (363.313 km/h). All 33 starters took laps without incident. Later in the afternoon, Penske Racing with driver Hélio Castroneves won the Coors Indy 500 Pit Stop Challenge. They defeated Chip Ganassi Racing and driver Jeff Ward in the final round.
