1950 NFL Season - Major Rule Changes

Major Rule Changes

  • The free substitution rule (any or all of the players may be replaced by substitutes after any play) was restored on a permanent basis. This change paved the way for player specialization in pro football, including three separate units for each team: offensive team, defensive team, and special teams.
  • If a backwards pass or fumble goes out of bounds before it is recovered, the team that had control of the ball last maintains possession.

Famous quotes containing the words major and/or rule:

True spoiling is nothing to do with what a child owns or with amount of attention he gets. he can have the major part of your income, living space and attention and not be spoiled, or he can have very little and be spoiled. It is not what he gets that is at issue. It is how and why he gets it. Spoiling is to do with the family balance of power.
    Penelope Leach (20th century)

You will find that reason, which always ought to direct mankind, seldom does; but that passions and weaknesses commonly usurp its seat, and rule in its stead.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
