World War II

The aerodrome opened in 1928 and during World War II the aerodrome was used as a training facility (Tiger Moths) and later an important centre for the repair of Wellington bombers and extensive sheds from this time still remain on site.

Many aerial shots for the film Battle of Britain were taken over the airport and nearby area.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:

There’s nothing in the world like the devotion of a married woman. It’s a thing no married man knows anything about.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

It was the most ungrateful and unjust act ever perpetrated by a republic upon a class of citizens who had worked and sacrificed and suffered as did the women of this nation in the struggle of the Civil War only to be rewarded at its close by such unspeakable degradation as to be reduced to the plane of subjects to enfranchised slaves.
    Anna Howard Shaw (1847–1919)
