Sunan International Airport

Sunan International Airport (IATA: FNJ, ICAO: ZKPY) is the main airport serving Pyongyang, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, located in the city's Sunan-guyŏk, 24 kilometres (15 mi) from the city's center.

Sunan has two runways, the larger of which (01/19) is currently in use. The second runway (17/35) is closed. The airport's hours of operation are from 06:00 to 22:00 in the summer and 07:00 to 21:00 in the winter.

The airport is the main hub of Air Koryo. In 2000, Aeroflot discontinued its flights from Moscow and later discontinued its services from Khabarovsk. China Southern Airlines offered scheduled charter flights to and from Beijing during the peak season only, permanently pulled its flights in November 2006. In April 2008, Air China re-established service to Beijing, 3 days per week. Mandarin Airlines offers group tour chartered flights between Taipei and Pyongyang during summer (June to August). Korean Air and Asiana Airlines also provided chartered flight services to Seoul, and Yangyang on the east coast of South Korea from Pyongyang. These flights were used by Korean family members visiting divided family across the border.

In July 2011, the new international terminal at Sunan International Airport was completed. The new terminal will cater for flights along side the existing Sunan terminal number 1. This single storey glass structure is more modern than the Soviet architecture of the main terminal building. This building is a customs building and will serve as an international terminal as the main terminal is undergoing renovations for 2012.

Famous quotes containing the word airport:

Airplanes are invariably scheduled to depart at such times as 7:54, 9:21 or 11:37. This extreme specificity has the effect on the novice of instilling in him the twin beliefs that he will be arriving at 10:08, 1:43 or 4:22, and that he should get to the airport on time. These beliefs are not only erroneous but actually unhealthy.
    Fran Lebowitz (b. 1950)
