His Last Year of Life

In Delhi, in February 1974, he organized a great "World Conference on Unity of Man", with more than two thousand delegates, religious and political leaders from India and all over the world, with an attendance of one hundred thousand people. At the Kumba Mela (Festival of Religions) in Hardwar, on 2 April the same year, he gathered sadhus (itinerant monks) and "saintly men" in the "Conference of National Unity", with the aim of favoring cooperation, eliminating all religious barriers and bettering the economical asset of the poor people of India. On 1 August he was invited to speak to the Indian Parliament, the only Master of the spirit who was given this particular honor. In the same month, on the 21st, he left his mortal body after a brief illness.

Famous quotes containing the words year and/or life:

    In some withdrawn, unpublic mead
Let me sigh upon a reed,
Or in the woods, with leafy din,
    Whisper the still evening in:
Some still work give me to do,—
    Only—be it near to you!
For I’d rather be thy child
And pupil, in the forest wild,
Than be the king of men elsewhere,
And most sovereign slave of care:
To have one moment of thy dawn,
Than share the city’s year forlorn.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Man is eminently a storyteller. His search for a purpose, a cause, an ideal, a mission and the like is largely a search for a plot and a pattern in the development of his life story—a story that is basically without meaning or pattern.
    Eric Hoffer (1902–1983)
