Famous quotes containing the words diving, fist and/or drop:

A worm is as good a traveler as a grasshopper or a cricket, and a much wiser settler. With all their activity these do not hop away from drought nor forward to summer. We do not avoid evil by fleeing before it, but by rising above or diving below its plane; as the worm escapes drought and frost by boring a few inches deeper.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Leadership in today’s world requires far more than a large stock of gunboats and a hard fist at the conference table.
    Hubert H. Humphrey (1911–1978)

What a vast fraternity it is,—that of ‘Hearts that Ache.’ For the last three months it has seemed to me as though all society were coming to me, to drop its mask for a moment and initiate me into the mystery. How we do suffer! And we go on laughing; for, as a practical joke at our expense, life is a success.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)
