Orthodox Church of Ghelar - Preceding Structures

Preceding Structures

The first church that is know was made of wood, but it was pulled down in the 19th century.

Another church made of stone that can be seen nowadays was built by a feudal lord, Gheorghe Berevoii, from Govãjdia (a neighboring village) in 1770, to thank God for having healed his wife. The church is Orthodox, although the feudal lord was a Calvinist, and has an outstandingly beautiful painting: There are scene from Passion Week and portraying the soldiers that insulted Christ, wearing the clothes of the people who had oppressed the Romanians from Transylvannia.

Famous quotes containing the words preceding and/or structures:

Postmodernism is, almost by definition, a transitional cusp of social, cultural, economic and ideological history when modernism’s high-minded principles and preoccupations have ceased to function, but before they have been replaced with a totally new system of values. It represents a moment of suspension before the batteries are recharged for the new millennium, an acknowledgment that preceding the future is a strange and hybrid interregnum that might be called the last gasp of the past.
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. Sunday Times: Books (London, April 21, 1991)

It is clear that all verbal structures with meaning are verbal imitations of that elusive psychological and physiological process known as thought, a process stumbling through emotional entanglements, sudden irrational convictions, involuntary gleams of insight, rationalized prejudices, and blocks of panic and inertia, finally to reach a completely incommunicable intuition.
    Northrop Frye (b. 1912)
