In 2008, Ware was expressly forbidden by the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I, from attending the annual conference of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Sourozh. However, in 2011, he did attend and spoke at the conference and concelebrated the liturgy with Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh. The previous year Ware had gone to Moscow and concelebrated with Patriarch Kirill at one of the churches in the Kremlin.
