Gallaeci - Origin of The Name

Origin of The Name

The Romans named the entire region north of that river, where the Castro culture existed, in honour of the Castro people that settled in the area of Calle — the Callaeci, later the Roman Portus Calle, today's Porto. Thus, a Roman province, known as Callaecia (Greek: Καλλαικία) or Gallaecia, was later created.

The names "Callaici" and "Calle" are the origin of today's: Gaia, Galicia, and the "Gal" root in "Portugal", among many other placenames in the region.

Famous quotes containing the words origin of the, the name, origin of and/or origin:

The essence of morality is a questioning about morality; and the decisive move of human life is to use ceaselessly all light to look for the origin of the opposition between good and evil.

There is a river in Macedon, and there is moreover a river in Monmouth. It is called Wye at Monmouth, but it is out of my prains what is the name of the other river; but ‘tis all one, ‘tis alike as my fingers is to my fingers, and there is salmons in both.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Someone had literally run to earth
In an old cellar hole in a byroad
The origin of all the family there.
Thence they were sprung, so numerous a tribe
That now not all the houses left in town
Made shift to shelter them without the help
Of here and there a tent in grove and orchard.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Good resolutions are useless attempts to interfere with scientific laws. Their origin is pure vanity. Their result is absolutely nil. They give us, now and then, some of those luxurious sterile emotions that have a certain charm for the weak.... They are simply cheques that men draw on a bank where they have no account.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
