Galactic Center - Proof of Existence and Location

Proof of Existence and Location

Because of interstellar dust along the line of sight, the Galactic Center cannot be studied at visible, ultraviolet or soft X-ray wavelengths. The available information about the Galactic Center comes from observations at gamma ray, hard X-ray, infrared, sub-millimetre and radio wavelengths.

Coordinates of the Galactic Center were first found by Harlow Shapley in his 1918 study of the distribution of the globular clusters. In the Equatorial coordinate system they are: RA 17h45m40.04s, Dec -29° 00' 28.1" (J2000 epoch).

Famous quotes containing the words proof of, proof and/or existence:

The insatiable thirst for everything which lies beyond, and which life reveals, is the most living proof of our immortality.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)

O, popular applause! what heart of man
Is proof against thy sweet, seducing charms?
    William Cowper (1731–1800)

This perceiving, active being is what I call mind, spirit, soul, or myself. By which words I do not denote any one of my ideas, but a thing entirely distinct from them, wherein they exist, or, which is the same thing, whereby they are perceived; for the existence of an idea consists in being perceived.
    George Berkeley (1685–1753)
