High School and College
Spencer was an all-state basketball player at Eastern High School in Middletown, Kentucky (now part of Louisville); as both a junior and a senior, he led the team to the KHSAA state tournament in Lexington. In the first year, Eastern was upset by lightly regarded Metcalfe County in the first round, 60-58. A year later as a senior, Eastern was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Hazard High School.
Spencer attended the University of Louisville, where he became the all-time field goal percentage leader at 62.8%. He took over the center position as a senior in 1989-90 after Pervis Ellison left to join the NBA. That season Spencer paced the Cardinals in scoring (14.9 ppg), rebounding (8.5 rpg), blocked shots (69), and field goal percentage (68.1%).

Famous quotes containing the words high, school and/or college:
“To that high Capital, where kingly Death
Keeps his pale court in beauty and decay,
He came.”
—Percy Bysshe Shelley (17921822)
“The first rule of education for me was discipline. Discipline is the keynote to learning. Discipline has been the great factor in my life. I discipline myself to do everythinggetting up in the morning, walking, dancing, exercise. If you wont have discipline, you wont have a nation. We cant have permissiveness. When someone comes in and says, Oh, your room is so quiet, I know Ive been successful.”
—Rose Hoffman, U.S. public school third-grade teacher. As quoted in Working, book 8, by Studs Terkel (1973)
“Jerry: Shes one of those third-year girls that gripe my liver.
Milo: Third-year girls?
Jerry: Yeah, you know, American college kids. They come over here to take their third year and lap up a little culture. They give me a swift pain.
Milo: Why?
Jerry: Theyre officious and dull. Theyre always making profound observations theyve overheard.”
—Alan Jay Lerner (19181986)
