Organisational Structure
The Centre changed its operational structure in 1 April 2011. As of 1 July 2012, it operates in a matrix structure based on five units. Seven Heads of Disease Programmes, in the Office of the Chief Scientist, will coordinate the existing disease programmes; the Office includes also the Scientific Advice and the Microbiology Coordination sections. Two shared resources units, the Surveillance and Response Support and the Public Health Capacity and Communication unit, provide specialised expertise. In addition, a Resource Management and Coordination unit will provide administrative support, while the Information and Communications Technologies supports tools, application development and infrastructures. Changes in the organisation were made following internal and external consultation and assessment of the functioning of the old structure. They are intended to enhance ECDC’s added value and contribution to improving the health of European citizens. ECDC has established six cross-cutting programmes: Respiratory Tract Infections (Influenza – Tuberculosis); STI including HIV and blood-borne viruses; Vaccine-preventable Diseases; Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections; Food and Water-Borne Diseases and Zoonoses and Emerging and Vector-Borne Diseases.

Famous quotes containing the word structure:
“Agnosticism is a perfectly respectable and tenable philosophical position; it is not dogmatic and makes no pronouncements about the ultimate truths of the universe. It remains open to evidence and persuasion; lacking faith, it nevertheless does not deride faith. Atheism, on the other hand, is as unyielding and dogmatic about religious belief as true believers are about heathens. It tries to use reason to demolish a structure that is not built upon reason.”
—Sydney J. Harris (19171986)
