Zinc Finger Protein Transcription Factor
Zinc finger transcription factors or ZF-TFs, are transcription factors composed of a zinc finger binding domain and any of a variety of transcription-factor effector-domains which exert their modulatory effect in the vicinity of any sequence to which the protein domain binds.
Zinc finger protein transcription factors can be encoded by genes small enough to fit a number of such genes into a single vector, allowing the medical intervention and control of expression of multiple genes and the initiation of an elaborate cascade of events. In this respect, it is also possible to target a sequence which is common to multiple (usually functionally related) genes in order to control the transcription of all these genes with a single transcription factor. Alternatively, it is possible to target a family of related genes by targeting and modulating the expression of the endogenous transcription factor(s) which control(s) them. They also have the advantage that the targeted sequence need not be symmetrical unlike with most other DNA-binding motifs based on natural transcription factors which bind as dimers.

Famous quotes containing the words finger, protein and/or factor:
“The great man knew not that he was great. It took a century or two for that fact to appear. What he did, he did because he must; it was the most natural thing in the world, and grew out of the circumstances of the moment. But now, every thing he did, even to the lifting of his finger or the eating of bread, looks large, all-related, and is called an institution.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Firm-style bean curd insoles cushion feet, absorb perspiration and provide more protein than meat or fish innersoles of twice the weight. Tofu compresses with use, becoming more pungent and flavorful. May be removed when not in use to dry or marinate. Innersoles are ready to eat after 1,200 miles of wear. Each pair provides adult protein requirement for 2 meals. Insoles are sized large to allow for snacks. Recipe booklet included.”
—Alfred Gingold, U.S. humorist. Items From Our Catalogue, Tofu Innersoles, Avon Books (1982)
“You factor in racism as a reality and you keep moving.”
—Jewell Jackson McCabe (b. 1945)
