World Salsa Championships / World Latin Dance Cup
2005 saw the birth of an alternative World Salsa Championships, created by Salsa promoter Albert Torres and a group of other promoters called the "Salsa Seven"; the second championships were held December 14–16, 2006. Competitions are held in four categories, namely On 1, On 2, Cabaret and Groups.
In 2010, the World Salsa Championships were re-branded as The World Latin Dance Cup (WLDC), to reflect its inclusion of other Latin dances besides salsa, such as Cha Cha Cha, Bachata, and Cumbia.
The first annual WLDC was held in San Diego, with the second competition being held in Las Vegas. In 2012 the competition was moved to Miami, due to its proximity to South America, which made the competition much more accessible to competitors from countries such as Colombia. The 2013 competition will be held in Miami as well.

Famous quotes containing the words world, latin, dance and/or cup:
“Every spirit builds itself a house; and beyond its house a world; and beyond its world, a heaven. Know then that the world exists for you.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Whither goest thou?”
—Bible: New Testament Peter, in John, 13:36.
The words, which are repeated in John 16:5, are best known in the Latin form in which they appear in the Vulgate: Quo vadis? Jesus replies, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
“No imperfection in budded mountain,
Valleys breathe, heaven and earth move together,
daisies push inches of yellow air, vegetables tremble,
green atoms shimmer in grassy mandalas,
sheep speckle the mountainside, revolving their jaws with empty eyes,
horses dance in the warm rain,”
—Allen Ginsberg (b. 1926)
“Sisters define their rivalry in terms of competition for the gold cup of parental love. It is never perceived as a cup which runneth over, rather a finite vessel from which the more one sister drinks, the less is left for the others.”
—Elizabeth Fishel (20th century)
