The Women's British Open is a leading event in women's professional golf, currently the only tournament classified as a major championship by both the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA Tour. The reigning champion is Yani Tseng of Taiwan, who successfully defended her title in 2011 at Carnoustie to win her fifth major at age 22.
Usually played in late July, the 2012 edition was scheduled for mid-September, due to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Since 2007, it has been called the Ricoh Women's British Open, for sponsorship reasons. From 1987 to 2006, the tournament was sponsored by Weetabix, a breakfast cereal.

Famous quotes containing the words women, british and/or open:
“The city is always recruited from the country. The men in cities who are the centres of energy, the driving-wheels of trade, politics or practical arts, and the women of beauty and genius, are the children or grandchildren of farmers, and are spending the energies which their fathers hardy, silent life accumulated in frosty furrows in poverty, necessity and darkness.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Comes from a fine family. So she tells me. Brothers a priest, all that. But, you know, death, disaster, unfortunate investments. One day shes a little princess, up on the hill. Next, shes down there, working the bars for the best she can.”
—Peter Prince, British screenwriter, and Stephen Frears. Harry (Bill Hunter)
“A childish soul not inoculated with compulsory prayer is a soul open to any religious infection.”
—Alexander Cockburn (b. 1941)
