Famous quotes containing the word reputation:

The cultivation of literary pursuits forms the basis of all sciences, and in their perfection consist the reputation and prosperity of kingdoms.
    Marquês De Pombal (1699–1782)

You know what the critics are. If you tell the truth they only say you’re cynical and it does an author no good to get a reputation for cynicism.
    W. Somerset Maugham (1874–1965)

The average man has a carefully cultivated ignorance about household matters—from what to do with the crumbs to the grocer’s telephone number—a sort of cheerful inefficiency which protects him better than the reputation for having a violent temper.
    Crystal Eastman (1881–1928)
