Wilson G. Hunt (sidewheeler) - Fraser River Gold Rush

Fraser River Gold Rush

When news of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush reached California, Hunt's owners sent her north to take advantage of the situation. Hunt arrived in Victoria in the middle of August, 1858. Because there was a shortage of British vessels, the colonial government at Victoria had decided to license American steamers to move the resultant gold rush traffic up the river. and ran for a short time on the New Westminster route. Another vessel running on the same route was the Sea Bird, which on September 7, 1858, caught fire en route and was destroyed, with the loss of two lives. Fortunately the Hunt was not far behind her and was able to take off her surviving passengers and crew.

Famous quotes containing the words river, gold and/or rush:

Sitting in that dusky wilderness, under that dark mountain, by the bright river which was full of reflected light, still I heard the wood thrush sing, as if no higher civilization could be attained. By this time the night was upon us.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

In the gold mouth of a flower
the black smell of spring earth.
No more skulls on our desks
    but the pervasive
    testing of death....
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

These people who are always briskly doing something and as busy as waltzing mice, they have little, sharp, staccato ideas.... But they have no slow, big ideas. And the fewer consoling, noble, shining, free, jovial, magnanimous ideas that come, the more nervously and desperately they rush and run from office to office and up and downstairs, thinking by action at last to make life have some warmth and meaning.
    Brenda Ueland (1891–1985)
