Willow Grove Park, Named Paradise

James A. Michener wrote a novel entitled The Fires of Spring, telling the story of a young orphan boy named David Harper growing up in a poorhouse in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which is near Willow Grove. Harper works at an amusement park named Paradise which is loosely based on Michener's own experiences as a young man when he worked at Willow Grove Park.

Famous quotes containing the words willow, grove, named and/or paradise:

    Make me a willow cabin at your gate,
    And call upon my soul within the house;
    Write loyal cantons of contemned love,
    And sing them loud even in the dead of night;
    Halloo your name to the reverberate hills,
    And make the babbling gossip of the air
    Cry out “Olivia!” O, you should not rest
    Between the elements of air and earth
    But you should pity me.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    Bees don’t swarm in a mango grove for nothing.
    Where can you see a wisp of smoke
    without a fire?
    Hla Stavhana (c. 50 A.D.)

    I sometimes think I was born to live up to my name. How could I be anything else but what I am having been named Madonna? I would either have ended up a nun or this.
    Madonna [Madonna Louise Ciccione] (b. 1959)

    Santa Barbara is a paradise; Disneyland is a paradise; the U.S. is a paradise. Paradise is just paradise. Mournful, monotonous, and superficial though it may be, it is paradise. There is no other.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
