He was an author in the periodicals of the Church including the Christian Science Journal and Christian Science Sentinel. He was a lecturer on Christian Science travelling extensively and taught classes on the subject to a large association of students until his death in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1939. He wrote "The Devil's Auction" in 1911, an allegory that has been widely copied, often with modifications and used in sermons as "The Devil's Garage Sale" and assumed to be author unknown.

They want to play at being mothers. So let them. Expressing tenderness in their own way will not prevent girls from enjoying a successful career in the future; indeed, the ability to nurture is as valuable a skill in the workplace as the ability to lead.
    Anne Roiphe (20th century)
