WHDH-TV (defunct) - News Operation

News Operation

WHDH's newscasts were known as "WHDH-TV News." This title was used until March 18, 1972, when the station signed off for the last time and was replaced by WCVB.

Among the anchors who worked there were John Day, Jack Hynes, John Henning, Chet Curtis, and in the final months before WHDH was forced off the air, a young reporter/anchor named Natalie Jacobson. Lead sports anchor was Don Gillis after 1962 (prior to that, sports scores were read by the news anchor) while weather reports were done first by Fred B. Cole, then Ray Miller, and finally Bob Copeland.

The station won several awards for news coverage, includingh multiple honors as "National News Film Station Of The Year" from the National Press Photographers Association.

When WCVB started up, nearly all of the former WHDH news staff was hired by that station.

Famous quotes containing the words news and/or operation:

I think of no news to tell you. It is a serene summer day here, all above the snow. The hens steal their nests, and I steal their eggs still, as formerly. This is what I do with the hands. Ah, labor,—it is a divine institution, and conversation with many men and hens.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

You may read any quantity of books, and you may almost as ignorant as you were at starting, if you don’t have, at the back of your minds, the change for words in definite images which can only be acquired through the operation of your observing faculties on the phenomena of nature.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)
