Western Scheldt - Western Scheldt Tunnel

Western Scheldt Tunnel

In mid-March 2003, a 6.6 km tunnel under the Western Scheldt was opened, the Western Scheldt Tunnel, from Ellewoutsdijk (mun. Borsele) in Zuid-Beveland to Terneuzen in Zeelandic Flanders. It is the longest road traffic tunnel in the Netherlands. The toll fee is €5,00 (2012) for cars and €2,50 (2012) for motorcycles. Motorcyclists have protested against the fact that their fee is the same as for cars but the toll was reduced in 2011. The toll booth is on the north bank, for both directions. Pedestrians, cyclists, and moped riders are only allowed to travel through the tunnel by bus.

Famous quotes containing the words western and/or tunnel:

Practically everyone now bemoans Western man’s sense of alienation, lack of community, and inability to find ways of organizing society for human ends. We have reached the end of the road that is built on the set of traits held out for male identity—advance at any cost, pay any price, drive out all competitors, and kill them if necessary.
    Jean Baker Miller (20th century)

    It is the light
At the end of the tunnel as it might be seen
By him looking out somberly at the shower,
The picture of hope a dying man might turn away from,
Realizing that hope is something else, something concrete
    You can’t have.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
