The Western Institute of Technology and Higher Education or Western Technological and Higher Studies Institute (in Spanish: Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente, ITESO), whose tagline is Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara, is a Jesuit university in the Western Mexican state of Jalisco, located in the municipality of Tlaquepaque – part of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area.
The university has approximately 9,000 students and offers a wide range of academic options including Civil Engineering and Architecture, Food Engineering, Education, Electronic Engineering, International Business, International Relations, Chemical Engineering, and Networks and Telecommunications Engineering. Although the university has not expanded yet over Mexico, its only campus being in Guadalajara, it is affiliated to the Jesuit University System which also holds the Iberoamerican Universities in Mexico City, León, Torreón, Puebla and Tijuana.
ITESO was first conceived by a group of Jesuits, families and local businesspeople who sought to lay the material and spiritual foundations for a different kind of university. Their proposal was to combine professional training with the education of men and women who would go out into the world with a firm sense of social responsibility and justice.
ITESO is the only university in Jalisco with the Registration as an Institution of Academic Excellence, awarded by Mexico’s Ministry of Public Education. It is the first private university of the central-western region of Mexico to offer graduate programs of excellence recognized by the National Council of Science and Technology (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, CONACYT) and the Mexican Society for the Public Communication of Science and Technology (SOMEDICYT). Among private universities in the country, ITESO has the greatest number of professors in the National System of Researchers (SNI), the greatest number of books published, as well as an outstanding library.

Famous quotes containing the words western, institute, technology, higher and/or education:
“Western man represents himself, on the political or psychological stage, in a spectacular world-theater. Our personality is innately cinematic, light-charged projections flickering on the screen of Western consciousness.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles & organising its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“If we had a reliable way to label our toys good and bad, it would be easy to regulate technology wisely. But we can rarely see far enough ahead to know which road leads to damnation. Whoever concerns himself with big technology, either to push it forward or to stop it, is gambling in human lives.”
—Freeman Dyson (b. 1923)
“The momentary charge at Balaklava, in obedience to a blundering command, proving what a perfect machine the soldier is, has, properly enough, been celebrated by a poet laureate; but the steady, and for the most part successful, charge of this man, for some years, against the legions of Slavery, in obedience to an infinitely higher command, is as much more memorable than that as an intelligent and conscientious man is superior to a machine. Do you think that that will go unsung?”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“I note what you say of the late disturbances in your College. These dissensions are a great affliction on the American schools, and a principal impediment to education in this country.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
