West Sussex Railway - Railcars

Railcars

Trains were originally steam-hauled but later, as on three other Col. Stephens railways, primitive petrol engined railcars were used. These utilised road bus chassis which had flanged railway wheels fitted for use on the railway. The wheels, being pressed steel, made a curious ringing sound which could apparently be heard from some distance and served as a call to latecomers who might otherwise have missed the train. The railcars included a two-car Ford, introduced 1923, and a two-car Shefflex, introduced 1928.
