West Side Line (NYCRR)

The West Side Line, also called the West Side Freight Line, is a railroad line on the west side of the New York City borough of Manhattan. North of Penn Station, from 34th Street, the line is used by Amtrak passenger service heading north via Albany to Toronto, Montreal and Chicago. South of Penn Station, a 1.45 mile (2.33 km) elevated section of the line abandoned since 1980 (popularly known as the High Line) is being transformed into an elevated park. The south section of the park from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street opened in 2009 and the second section up to 30th Street opened in 2011.

Famous quotes containing the words west, side and/or line:

Just how difficult it is to write biography can be reckoned by anybody who sits down and considers just how many people know the real truth about his or her love affairs.
—Rebecca West [Cicily Isabel Fairfield] (1892–1983)

The very notion of tabu is one of the rightest notions in the world. Better any old tabu than none, for a man cannot be said to be “on the side of the stars” at all, unless he makes refusals.
    Katharine Fullerton Gerould (1879–1944)

As for conforming outwardly, and living your own life inwardly, I do not think much of that. Let not your right hand know what your left hand does in that line of business. It will prove a failure.... It is a greater strain than any soul can long endure. When you get God to pulling one way, and the devil the other, each having his feet well braced,—to say nothing of the conscience sawing transversely,—almost any timber will give way.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
