Arts and Culture
West Harrow, considered to to be the a bohemian part of Harrow, boasts the first and only contemporary artist-led gallery in the borough which was set up in 2010 by the Usurp Art Collective. The space is called the Usurp Art Gallery & Studios and was converted from an old butchers shop. Usurp Art provides professional support to artists and runs the only public artists studios in the borough. It is a flagship project for Arts Council England.

Famous quotes containing the words arts and, arts and/or culture:
“I should say that the most prominent scientific men of our country, and perhaps of this age, are either serving the arts and not pure science, or are performing faithful but quite subordinate labors in particular departments. They make no steady and systematic approaches to the central fact.... There is wanting constant and accurate observation with enough of theory to direct and discipline it. But, above all, there is wanting genius.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)

“Anthropologists have found that around the world whatever is considered mens work is almost universally given higher status than womens work. If in one culture it is men who build houses and women who make baskets, then that culture will see house-building as more important. In another culture, perhaps right next door, the reverse may be true, and basket- weaving will have higher social status than house-building.”
