West Coast Conference - Sports

Sports

The WCC sponsors intercollegiate competition in 13 sports, though not every school participates in every sport. The conference will add softball as its 14th sport in the 2014 season (2013–14 school year).

Pacific will sponsor baseball, men's and women's basketball, women's cross country, men's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball upon joining the WCC in 2013. By 2015, a men's soccer team will be sponsored, plus another core women's sport. With Pacific's arrival, the WCC will have the six softball schools that it needs to receive an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament, which led the conference to announce it was adding that sport in 2013–14.

WCC schools also sponsor varsity sports not sponsored by the WCC. These schools participate in other conferences or as independents for these sports.

  • mixed competitive cheerleading (non-NCAA: LMU)
  • men’s football (San Diego in the Pioneer Football League and BYU as an FBS Independent)
  • women's lacrosse (Saint Mary's in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)
  • men’s rowing (non-NCAA: Gonzaga, San Diego and Santa Clara in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association)
  • women’s softball (BYU, LMU, Saint Mary's, San Diego and Santa Clara in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference)
    • These schools will join Pacific to form the new WCC softball conference in 2013–14.
  • women’s spirit team (non-NCAA: San Diego)
  • men's swimming and diving (BYU in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)

Pacific sponsors these sports that are not sponsored by the WCC: softball, field hockey, men's and women's swimming, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo. As noted above, Pacific's softball team will start competing in the WCC upon rejoining the conference.

Famous quotes containing the word sports:

Guys do not have a genetic blueprint that allows them to understand or love sports.
Lesley Visser, U.S. sports reporter and announcer. As quoted in Sports Illustrated, p. 82 (June 17, 1991)

Reading about ethics is about as likely to improve one’s behavior as reading about sports is to make one into an athlete.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

Even from their infancy we frame them to the sports of love: their instruction, behaviour, attire, grace, learning and all their words aimeth only at love, respects only affection. Their nurses and their keepers imprint no other thing in them.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
