Weimar Republic - Reasons For The Republic's Failure

Reasons For The Republic's Failure

The reasons for the Weimar Republic's collapse are the subject of continuing debate. It may have been doomed from the beginning since even moderates disliked it and extremists on both the left and right loathed it. Germany had limited democratic traditions and Weimar democracy was widely seen as chaotic. And since Weimar politicians had been blamed for the Dolchstoßlegende ("Stab-in-the-back myth")—a then-widely believed theory that Germany's surrender in World War I had been the unnecessary act of traitors—the popular legitimacy of the government was on shaky ground.

No single reason can explain the failure of the Weimar Republic. The most commonly asserted causes can be grouped into three categories: economic problems, institutional problems and the roles of specific individuals.

Famous quotes containing the words reasons for the, reasons, republic and/or failure:

It’s an old trick now, God knows, but it works every time. At the very moment women start to expand their place in the world, scientific studies deliver compelling reasons for them to stay home.
    Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)

... to a poet, the human community is like the community of birds to a bird, singing to each other. Love is one of the reasons we are singing to one another, love of language itself, love of sound, love of singing itself, and love of the other birds.
    Sharon Olds (b. 1942)

I have always considered it as treason against the great republic of human nature, to make any man’s virtues the means of deceiving him.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

Parents are never forgiven for not giving just the right response at the appropriate moment. Or, rather, there are particular times in the adolescent’s or young adult’s life, when a certain response is needed, and this need is not met, and the failure to meet this need is forever remembered, and is never forgiven.
    Terri Apter (20th century)
