Route Description
SR-542 begins at I-5. It heads northeast thru Bellingham as Sunset Drive, and is four lanes from Interstate 5 to near Squalicum High School. From there, it continues east as a two-lane highway. It meets northbound highway 9 in Nugent's Corner, where it begins to follow the Nooksack River. The highway is joined with highway 9 until it meets southbound 9 in Deming. From there, the highway curves north to Kendall, where it meets highway 547. Then it heads east, still following the Nooksack, to the Mount Baker Ski Area, passing through the towns of Maple Falls, and Glacier.
The eastern end of SR 542 is closed most of the year at 5,100-foot (1,600 m) Artist Point. This section typically opens in July and closes after the first substantial snowfall of the year. It closed on September 29, 2009; October 6, 2008; and September 27, 2007.
