Warren Aspinall - Life Outside Football

Life Outside Football

After leaving the game, Aspinall turned to drink and picked up a gambling addiction. His gambling cost him around £1 million that he had earned during his long career. On the verge of suicide, after narrowly avoiding death by train, saved only by last minute thoughts of his family, he checked himself into the Sporting Chance clinic. He has fronted a Samaritans campaign, "Men on the Ropes", that aims to reduce male suicides.

Aspinall is now working in a Sainsbury's distribution centre in Basingstoke and had been scouting for League Two side Port Vale under manager Micky Adams.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or football:

The goal in raising one’s child is to enable him, first, to discover who he wants to be, and then to become a person who can be satisfied with himself and his way of life. Eventually he ought to be able to do in his life whatever seems important, desirable, and worthwhile to him to do; to develop relations with other people that are constructive, satisfying, mutually enriching; and to bear up well under the stresses and hardships he will unavoidably encounter during his life.
    Bruno Bettelheim (20th century)

... in the minds of search committees there is the lingering question: Can she manage the football coach?
    Donna E. Shalala (b. 1941)
