Fifth Bridge
In 1999, the fourth bridge was replaced for motor traffic by another temporary bridge, while the fourth remains standing until the sixth is built, the fifth Walton Bridge, occupying the line of the original bridges. This initially had several problems and had to be resurfaced a number of times causing traffic disruptions. Architecture of these two co-existing bridges being so poor led to demands for construction of the Sixth bridge (pictured). Together, the old bridges faced heavy criticism as had the very existence of a rusting, less strong, incongrous, military style foot and cycle bridge bridge and engineers predicted structural weakness by 2015, hence the plans for a new bridge. In 2003 a political impetus built for rebuilding continuing to prove a key local election issue for councillors seeking to run for Elmbridge borough council and Surrey County Council.

“It's in an awful state,” he said. “People are also interested in what’s happening with the bridge... |

Famous quotes containing the word bridge:
“It launchd forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.
And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be formd, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O, my soul.”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
“Home! Yes! she would see Trafalgar Square, again; and Nelson on his plinth; and Chelsea Bridge as it dissolved into the Thames at twilight ... and St. Pauls, the single Amazon breast of her beloved native city.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
