Earlier Crossings At The Site
Ferries operated across the river for centuries at Hampton-to-Molesey, Sunbury-to-Sunbury Lock in Walton, Lower Halliford in Shepperton-to-Walton and Shepperton-to-Weybridge. Hampton and Shepperton ferries remain in use and connect to the Thames Path. Land near Walton Ferry was said in 1633 to have been washed away, reflecting the lack of additional river channels, lack of weirs and former marshiness of the tight bends of the river known as Cowey Sale and a similar plot of land, Thames Meadow on the north bank. A Shepperton ferry is recorded in the 15th century.

Famous quotes containing the words earlier and/or site:
“It is a quite remarkable fact that the great religions of the most civilized peoples are more deeply fraught with sadness than the simpler beliefs of earlier societies. This certainly does not mean that the current of pessimism is eventually to submerge the other, but it proves that it does not lose ground and that it does not seem destined to disappear.”
—Emile Durkheim (18581917)
“It is not menstrual blood per se which disturbs the imaginationunstanchable as that red flood may bebut rather the albumen in the blood, the uterine shreds, placental jellyfish of the female sea. This is the chthonian matrix from which we rose. We have an evolutionary revulsion from slime, our site of biologic origins. Every month, it is womans fate to face the abyss of time and being, the abyss which is herself.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
