Famous quotes containing the words wake, forest, demon and/or basketball:

—Guy Endore, and Tod Browning. Chauffeur (Franklyn Ardel)
“Look at this poet William Carlos Williams: he is primitive and native, and his roots are in raw forest and violent places; he is word-sick and place-crazy. He admires strength, but for what? Violence! This is the cult of the frontier mind.”
—Edward Dahlberg (19001977)
“Not necessity, not desireno, the love of power is the demon of mankind. Grant them everything, health, food, housing, entertainmentthey are and remain unhappy and anxious: for the demon waits and waits, and wants to be satisfied.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
“Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.”
—Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
