History
Kings Island set out to build a new looping roller coaster for the 1987 season that would break records. They turned to Arrow Dynamics, one of the leading roller coaster manufacturers in the industry during that time, and construction began in the winter of 1986. The line queue and station from The Bat were reused for the Vortex. After opening, Vortex briefly set two records that lasted until the following year when they were surpassed by Shockwave at Six Flags Great America.
The Vortex has been repainted at least twice: during the 2001 season and again in April 2009 before opening day. The ride celebrates its 25th anniversary during the 2012 season and has given a total of 38,464,642 rides since its debut - sixth-most in Kings Island's history.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Postmodernism is, almost by definition, a transitional cusp of social, cultural, economic and ideological history when modernisms high-minded principles and preoccupations have ceased to function, but before they have been replaced with a totally new system of values. It represents a moment of suspension before the batteries are recharged for the new millennium, an acknowledgment that preceding the future is a strange and hybrid interregnum that might be called the last gasp of the past.”
—Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. Sunday Times: Books (London, April 21, 1991)
“Let it suffice that in the light of these two facts, namely, that the mind is One, and that nature is its correlative, history is to be read and written.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The history of all previous societies has been the history of class struggles.”
—Karl Marx (18181883)
