Voluntary student unionism (VSU) is a policy, notable in Australia, under which membership of – and payment of membership fees to – university student organisations is voluntary.
Voluntary student unionism has been implemented in Australia and at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, where it is known as voluntary student membership (VSM).
Forms of VSU have been law in the state of Western Australia from 1994 until 2002, in Victoria from 1994 to 2000, in New Zealand since 1999 and across Australia from 1 July 2006.

Famous quotes containing the words voluntary, student and/or unionism:
“I am willing to pledge myself that if the time should ever come that the voluntary agencies of the country together with the local and state governments are unable to find resources with which to prevent hunger and suffering ... I will ask the aid of every resource of the Federal Government.... I have the faith in the American people that such a day will not come.”
—Herbert Hoover (18741964)
“It is clear that everybody interested in science must be interested in world 3 objects. A physical scientist, to start with, may be interested mainly in world 1 objectssay crystals and X-rays. But very soon he must realize how much depends on our interpretation of the facts, that is, on our theories, and so on world 3 objects. Similarly, a historian of science, or a philosopher interested in science must be largely a student of world 3 objects.”
—Karl Popper (19021994)
“What is Virtue but the Trade Unionism of the married?”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
