Production
The film was shot at Spokane's Rogers High School, referred to as "Thompson High School" in the film. The school building has gone through major renovations since the filming, with the only still recognizable characteristic being the school's front entrance.
Interior cafeteria scenes were filmed at Ferris High School on Spokane's South Hill. Some of the locker room scenes were filmed in the Shadle Park High School boys' locker room.
Madonna's scene was filmed at the Big Foot Tavern on North Division (Mews?) in Spokane.
Other scenes were shot at The Onion Restaurant downtown and the North Central High School gym. The gym today looks much as it did in the movie.

Famous quotes containing the word production:
“[T]he asphaltum contains an exactly requisite amount of sulphides for production of rubber tires. This brown material also contains ichthyol, a medicinal preparation used externally, in Websters clarifying phrase, as an alterant and discutient.”
—State of Utah, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
“Just as modern mass production requires the standardization of commodities, so the social process requires standardization of man, and this standardization is called equality.”
—Erich Fromm (19001980)
“An art whose limits depend on a moving image, mass audience, and industrial production is bound to differ from an art whose limits depend on language, a limited audience, and individual creation. In short, the filmed novel, in spite of certain resemblances, will inevitably become a different artistic entity from the novel on which it is based.”
—George Bluestone, U.S. educator, critic. The Limits of the Novel and the Limits of the Film, Novels Into Film, Johns Hopkins Press (1957)
