Organizational Background
The Violence Policy Center is a research-based organization in Washington, D.C., US. Its work includes lobbying the United States Congress to end non-military and non-law-enforcement ownership of handguns and to tighten the regulation of long guns. The VPC has drawn the attention of Congress to gun-related cases by distributing its published research and analysis, and numerous US gun control organizations have used VPC reports and terminology to advance local gun control initiatives.
The VPC formed a coalition with the Firearms Policy Project in 1994. The coalition typically handles cases involving pro-gun control legislation that have usually been backed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other national or state gun lobbyists.
Since the VPC has no official membership fee, it relies on donations from the public. The main donor to the VPC is the Joyce Foundation, which also supports other pro-gun control organizations, including the Mayors Fund to Advance New York City and the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

Famous quotes containing the word background:
“Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
