Victorian Goldfields Railway - Maldon Station Fire

Maldon Station Fire

During the late hours of 20 October 2009 a fire ripped through Maldon station building causing major damage and loss of equipment. Not to be brought down by the situation, The VGR ran regular services as usual on the 21st hauled by K160. At the time of this addition, the major brick work structure of the station is deemed safe to rebuild on, although the remaining damaged roof will have to be demolished, plans are underway to return the station building to its former glory as time and finances permit. Contract work on the roof through VicTrack commenced on 4 February 2011.

On Thursday 30 June 2011 the VGR was handed the keys to the completed Maldon Station Rebuild Project. This tremendous accomplishment comes just over 20 months after the tragic fire during the late hours of Tuesday 20 October 2009 that destroyed the Historic Maldon Station Building.

Famous quotes containing the words station and/or fire:

    It was evident that the same foolish respect was not here claimed for mere wealth and station that is in many parts of New England; yet some of them were the “first people,” as they are called, of the various towns through which we passed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    The fire I praise was once perduring flame
    Till it snuffs with our generation out;
    No matter, it’s all one, it’s but a name
    Not as late honeysuckle half so stout....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
