Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center is a hospital in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines.
It began operation in 1911 as Hospital Del Sur and was soon legally established as Southern Islands Hospital. In 1992, it was renamed to honor Senator Vicente Sotto. As of 1998, it is authorized to have 800 beds.
The hospital is the site of the Canister Scandal, in which surgeons secretly video-taped an operation removing a canister from a man's anus and broadcasted it on the web. The patient filed a suit against them. As a penalty, the surgeons were suspended from work but were pardoned and reinstated only a few months later.
Famous quotes containing the words memorial, medical and/or center:
“I hope there will be no effort to put up a shaft or any monument of that sort in memory of me or of the other women who have given themselves to our work. The best kind of a memorial would be a school where girls could be taught everything useful that would help them to earn an honorable livelihood; where they could learn to do anything they were capable of, just as boys can. I would like to have lived to see such a school as that in every great city of the United States.”
—Susan B. Anthony (18201906)
“Homoeopathy is insignificant as an art of healing, but of great value as criticism on the hygeia or medical practice of the time.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“There is nothing more natural than to consider everything as starting from oneself, chosen as the center of the world; one finds oneself thus capable of condemning the world without even wanting to hear its deceitful chatter.”
—Guy Debord (b. 1931)
