Flora and Fauna
Most of the original vegetation of the island has been cleared by the use of fire and by bulldozers with chains, destroying many stands of Oyster Bay Pine.
Recorded breeding seabird and wader species are Little Penguin, Pacific Gull, Sooty Oystercatcher and Pied Oystercatcher. Black Swans have nested on the island, which is also a refuge for Cape Barren Geese. Reptiles present include Tiger Snake, Southern Grass Skink, Metallic Skink and Bougainville's Skink. Red-necked Wallabies are present, and possibly Echidnas, though the Tasmanian Pademelon is extinct there.

Famous quotes containing the words flora and/or fauna:
“A mans interest in a single bluebird is worth more than a complete but dry list of the fauna and flora of a town.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The whole fauna of human fantasies, their marine vegetation, drifts and luxuriates in the dimly lit zones of human activity, as though plaiting thick tresses of darkness. Here, too, appear the lighthouses of the mind, with their outward resemblance to less pure symbols. The gateway to mystery swings open at the touch of human weakness and we have entered the realms of darkness. One false step, one slurred syllable together reveal a mans thoughts.”
—Louis Aragon (18971982)
