Vancouver College - Sports

Sports

Athletics is a key part of the tradition and culture of Vancouver College. The school competes in many sports, including

  • Badminton
  • Wrestling
  • Cross-country
  • Downhill skiing
  • Football
  • Snowboarding
  • Soccer
  • Golf
  • Swimming
  • Rowing
  • Volleyball
  • Tennis
  • Basketball
  • Track and field
  • Lacrosse
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Ice hockey
  • Rugby
  • Squash

Students are expected and encouraged to participate in these programs. The football and basketball programs traditionally rank among the top teams in British Columbia, while VC's rowing has performed well at nationals, often ranking first or second. VC's teams are known as the "Fighting Irish", a slogan used as a reflection of school pride.

For the Irish, the 2007-2008 season was full of astounding achievements. The VC badminton and track and field teams came first in the province, and the rugby team (despite being the first College team since 1928) won the Lower Mainland New Zealand Shield.

In 2010, head Coach Todd Bernett lead the Fighting Irish Varsity football team to their first BC provincial title since 1994.

Famous quotes containing the word sports:

    Reading about ethics is about as likely to improve one’s behavior as reading about sports is to make one into an athlete.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

    Sweet smiling village, loveliest of the lawn,
    Thy sports are fled and all thy charms withdrawn;
    Amidst thy bowers the tyrant’s hand is seen,
    And desolation saddens all thy green;
    One only master grasps the whole domain,
    And half a tillage stints thy smiling plain;
    Oliver Goldsmith (1730?–1774)

    Falling in love is the right adventure for those who dislike sports and travel.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
