Production
The film was the 50th directorial venture by S. P. Muthuraman, and thus the leading Tamil production house, AVM Productions, opted to commemorate the achievement by making a film with him. The period also saw AVM Productions combine with Kamal Haasan four times in quick succession, making Sagalakala Vallavan (1982), Thoongadhey Thambi Thoongadhey (1983) and Per Sollum Pillai (1987). The actor was signed on for the film after the success of the former two projects.
